Automotive applications generally involve mounting bearings in stamped electric motor housings ( Siemens Automotive, Johnson Electric) or involve applications where the tolerance ring slips radially or axially under a pre-determined load. Virtually all of the leading automotive OEMs in Western Europe use a Tolerance Ring as a non-destructive anti-theft slip between the shaft and locking collar. Another slip clutch design (Toyota) uses the ring to protect the gear teeth from breakage under shock loads in an Electronic Power Assisted Steering System. Rings in many Lemforder columns are used to slip axially in a collapse mechanism (energy absorption).
In all cases, the tolerance ring ceases to slip once loads return to normal.
